Best Telescopic Trekking Poles for Australian Hikers in 2026

2026年7月16日

Whether you're tackling the Overland Track in Tasmania, scrambling up the Blue Mountains, or just hitting a weekend bush trail with the family, a good pair of trekking poles can completely change your hiking game. Australian trails range from rocky outback terrain to slippery coastal paths, and having the right support underfoot makes every step safer and more enjoyable. If you've been thinking about upgrading your gear, 2026 is the perfect year to invest in a quality set of telescopic trekking poles.

Why This Matters for Australians

Australia's hiking scene is seriously underrated — we've got everything from red dirt tracks through the NT to alpine meadows in the Snowy Mountains, and Aussie hikers are spoiled for choice when it comes to incredible landscapes. But that variety also means the terrain can be unforgiving. Steep descents, loose gravel, creek crossings, and long multi-day treks all put real strain on your knees, ankles, and lower back. Telescopic trekking poles help distribute that load, giving you four points of contact with the ground instead of two — which is a game changer when you're carrying a full pack in the summer heat or navigating slippery roots after a wet winter.

Beyond the physical benefits, trekking poles just make hiking more fun. They give you confidence on challenging sections, help you maintain a rhythm on long flat stretches, and can even double as tent poles or emergency splints if things go sideways. With school holidays encouraging more Australian families to get outdoors and explore national parks, trekking poles are becoming standard kit for hikers of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or heading out for your first overnight adventure, having the right poles in your pack is one of the smartest decisions you can make before hitting the trail.

💡 Tips for Choosing the Right One

Always adjust the pole length so your elbow sits at roughly a 90-degree angle on flat ground — this is the most common sizing mistake beginners make.
Look for poles with a secure locking mechanism (twist-lock or lever-lock) that won't slip mid-hike, especially important on steep Australian descents where consistent pole height matters.
Aluminium poles are a great all-rounder for most Australian hikers — they're tough, affordable, and handle the rough stuff well compared to carbon fibre which can snap under lateral stress.
If you're hiking in warmer Australian climates like Queensland or the NT, choose poles with cork or foam grips rather than rubber, as they absorb sweat better and reduce hot-spot blisters on long days.
Swap out the rubber tip covers for trekking baskets or carbide tips depending on your terrain — rubber caps are great for hard surfaces and roads, while carbide tips grip better on rocky or root-covered bush tracks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BuyProducts ship trekking poles Australia-wide?

Yes! BuyProducts (buyproducts.com) ships across Australia, including to regional and rural areas. Delivery times vary depending on your location, but most metro orders arrive within a few business days — check the website for the latest shipping rates and estimated timeframes for your postcode.

Are these trekking poles suitable for tall or short hikers?

Absolutely — telescopic poles are designed to be fully adjustable, so they work well for hikers of different heights. Most quality telescopic poles adjust across a wide height range, typically from around 65cm to 135cm, making them suitable for both adults and older teens on the trail.

What material are these poles made from and how strong are they?

These poles are made from lightweight aluminium, which is a popular choice for hiking gear because it strikes a great balance between strength and weight. Aluminium handles impacts and rough terrain well without being too heavy in your hands, making it ideal for the varied conditions you'll encounter on Australian trails.

How do I care for and maintain my trekking poles after a hike?

After a muddy or wet hike — which is pretty common on Australian winter trails — rinse the poles with fresh water, extend them fully, and leave them open to dry before storing. Avoid storing them in a compressed state for extended periods as this can affect the locking mechanisms over time, and periodically check that all the joints and locks are tightened and free of grit or debris.

Whether you're planning an epic multi-day trek or just want extra confidence on weekend bush walks, a solid pair of telescopic trekking poles is one of the best additions you can make to your hiking kit.
