Best Telescopic Trekking Poles for Australian Hikers in 2026

2026年9月1日

Whether you're tackling the rugged trails of the Blue Mountains, stomping through the red dirt of the Flinders Ranges, or just getting out into the bush on weekends, a solid pair of trekking poles can completely transform your hike. Australians are spoiled for incredible outdoor landscapes, but those same landscapes can be tough on your knees and ankles — and that's exactly where telescopic trekking poles earn their keep. If you've been on the fence about picking up a pair, let us break down why 2026 is the year to finally make the call.

Why This Matters for Australians

Australia's hiking terrain is as diverse as it gets — from slippery coastal tracks after a summer downpour to steep rocky ascents in the alpine regions of Victoria and NSW. That variety means your body takes a real beating, especially on the descents where knee strain is a genuine concern. Telescopic trekking poles help distribute the load across your upper body, reduce impact on your joints, and give you extra stability on loose gravel or wet roots. For Australians who hike year-round — and let's be honest, our climate basically invites it — having poles that can be adjusted on the fly and packed down small is an absolute game-changer.

It's not just serious multi-day trekkers who benefit either. School holiday hikes with the kids, a sunrise walk up a national park summit before the heat kicks in, or even a weekend trail walk in your local bushland reserve — trekking poles make all of these more comfortable and safer for the whole family. Lightweight, collapsible designs mean you're not lugging around extra bulk, and they store easily in the car boot or a day pack. For the everyday Aussie adventurer who wants to get more out of the great outdoors without wrecking their body, these poles are a genuinely smart investment.

💡 Tips for Choosing the Right One

Look for poles with an adjustable wrist strap so you can maintain grip comfortably on long descents without overworking your hands.
For most Aussie terrain, aluminium poles strike the best balance between durability and affordability — carbon fibre is lighter but more prone to snapping on rocky outback trails.
When adjusting pole height, a good rule of thumb is to set them so your elbow forms a 90-degree angle when the tip is on flat ground.
If you're hiking on soft bush tracks or sandy coastal trails, rubber tip covers can prevent the poles from sinking in and give you better push-off.
Always test the locking mechanism before you hit the trail — a pole that collapses mid-hike on a steep descent is the last thing you want in Australian backcountry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these trekking poles suitable for beginners?

Absolutely — telescopic trekking poles are actually one of the best investments a beginner hiker can make. They improve balance and reduce fatigue on uneven terrain, which makes your first few trail experiences a lot more enjoyable. Start with shorter hikes around your local national park and you'll quickly get the hang of the rhythm.

What material are the poles made from, and how durable are they?

These poles are made from lightweight aluminium, which is a great choice for general Australian hiking conditions — it's strong enough to handle rocky terrain and scrubby bush tracks without being too heavy for long days on the trail. Aluminium is also more resistant to snapping under sudden pressure compared to carbon fibre, so it's a solid pick for adventurous or off-track hiking.

How do I adjust the poles to the right height for my body?

The simple way is to hold the pole with the tip on the ground and adjust the length until your elbow is at roughly a 90-degree angle — that's your neutral position for flat terrain. For uphill sections, shorten the poles slightly; for downhill, extend them a little longer to take load off your knees. Most users find their sweet spot within the first 15 minutes of a hike.
